Book Review: Bird Box by Josh Malerman

Once I began to see signs of fall I was ready to jump into some scary reading! I kicked off my fall reading with Bird Box. When I learned that this book is going to be adapted to a Netflix movie, I had to check it out. Read more to see what I thought about this book.

About the Book

Author: Josh Malerman

Published: May 2014

Pages: 262

Other works: Unbury Carol, Goblin, Black Mad Wheel and more.

Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remains, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now that the boy and girl are four, it’s time to go, but the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat–blindfolded–with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. Something is following them all the while, but is it man, animal, or monster?

Interweaving past and present, Bird Box is a snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

My Review:

Let me start off by saying that I really want you to read my full review, but I did not like this book. It was boring and I just could not get around the fact that I still don’t know what the hell they were trying to not look at. It took me 11 days to read a book that is less than 300 pages and I came so close to dropping it. This is one book where I feel that the movie will likely be better than the book.

I will say, it had me at the beginning. I honestly think that the part that turned me off was the present day when Malorie was trying to travel upstream with her two children who have been forbidden to see outside all their lives. I know it is a fictional account, but I feel like there was so much that was totally unrealistic.  This book left too much unanswered questions for me and I am not a big fan of that. Say what you mean please!

Basically, Bird Box by Josh Malerman is dystopian fiction and the main character, Malorie is trying to get somewhere (where has yet to be defined) on a boat, blindfolded with her two children. Why are they blindfolded? Because of some unknown creature that apparently makes people go crazy. But, this also has not been clarified, so I don’t know. Throughout the story she daydreams about when this all first started and how a group of survivors lived in a house with the windows covered; unable to go outside without a blindfold because of said unknown creature. And how the heck does she end up with two children? Are they twins? How are they surviving? Are we being real here? I find all this out, but these were some of my questions throughout the book.

I will say, it’s suspenseful and kept me at the edge of my seat. But it was more because of the unknown and maybe that is where Malerman was going for.

Overall barely 3 stars for me and mainly because of the suspense. That is what kept me reading and wanting to know what happens in the end.

Have you read Bird Box? What did you think about it?

Happy Reading!
