Strange Fruit

This song has struck a chord with me. And it should! Rebecca Ferguson agrees to sing at the inauguration if she can sing this particular song. I admire her courage and I am there for it and only for it. I doubt she will be allowed to sing this song however. Not because Donald J Trump heard the song and knows the lyrics; but because his advisors did. We know he can’t be bothered with that kind of activity. He’ll likely turn to Twitter with another rant about it.

I also watched Birth of a Nation last night and this song was played toward the end when all the slaves were hanging from trees like fruit.

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
